The IODD (IO Device Description) is a powerful tool that significantly simplifies the commissioning, operation, and maintenance of an IO-Link systems.

By providing a comprehensive standardized description of device identification ( e.g. manufacturer, type, serial number), configurable parameters, process data (measurements and control signals), diagnostic data, and communication characteristics (data rate and format), the IODD facilitates automated device recognition, configuration, and troubleshooting. Through that description it enables greater flexibility, availability, and process quality within automation.

  • IODD enables plug-and-work functionality by providing all necessary device information for automatic configuration. This gives also the ability to add new devices to an existing system without significant changes to the overall architecture.
  • Enhanced flexibility: The IODD allows for easy device replacement and reconfiguration without any additional software tools.
  • Improved data quality: By providing detailed information about the device and its capabilities, the IODD enables more accurate and reliable data collection and analysis

An IODD is a set of files in a Zip file format that describes a IO-Link device. The set of files consists of the main IODD file, optional language files, optional picture files and the manufacturer declaration.

IODDs can be found in the IODDfinder provided by the IO-Link community.
