The IO-Link technology is the first globally standardized IO technology (IEC 61131-9) for communicating with sensors and actuators. The powerful point-to-point communication is based on the long-established 3-wire sensor and actuator connection without any additional requirements for the cable material. IO-Link is therefore not a fieldbus, but the evolutionary further development of the previous, tried and tested connection technology for sensors and actuators.
What is IO-Link?
- IO-Link is fieldbus-independent and can be integrated into all fieldbuses worldwide.
- IO-Link relies on standards such as M12, M8 or M5 connectors and three-wire cables.
- IO-Link is an international standard in accordance with IEC 61131-9.
- IO-Link is universal ... and ... always fits!
- IO-Link is functional and, thanks to bidirectional communication for extended diagnostics of sensors and actuators or simple and fast parameterization.
- IO-Link is fast thanks to its three communication speeds of 4.8kBaud, 38.4kBaud and 230.4kBaud.
- IO-Link is small and enables the miniaturization of "intelligent" sensors and actuators
- IO-Link is smart ... and ... works with you!
- IO-Link is efficient; easiest wiring with an unscreened three-wire cable enables bidirectional communication with extensive diagnosis and parameter setting.
- IO-Link is automated because parameter data on a server enable the decentralised parameter setting of devices in shortest time.
- IO-Link is helpful, because simple remote maintenance of devices is possible via the bidirectional communication.
- IO-Link is easy ... and ... knows what's going on!
The system architecture can look like this:
IO-Link Integration
IO-Link sensors and actuators are the physical interface to the automated process. With its easy installation, ability to integrate into even the smallest devices and its worldwide distribution with more than 500 manufacturers and 20,000 different products, IO-Link is the basis for consistent automation technology. Making this available for
IODD
The IODD (IO Device Description) is an essential file format that streamlines the setup, operation, and maintenance of an IO-Link system. It is delivered as a compressed ZIP file containing essential data about an IO-Link device. This set includes the main IODD file, optional language and image files, and the manufacturer's declaration, ensuring easy integration and comprehensive device documentation.
IO-Link Device Profiles
In addition to the electrical and mechanical characteristics, the device description IODD (IO Device Description) provides detailed information about the manufacturer, serial number, article number operating states and much more. However, process data, parameters and functions for sensors are still hardly standardized. A remedy profiles, which are continuously being expanded by the IO-Link community are being expanded.
IO-Link Safety
With IO-Link Safety, IO-Link now also offers the possibility of implementing applications with functional safety. As with IO-Link, the IO-Link Safety Masters implement the communication in the higher-level systems such as PROFIsafe, CIPsafety or FSOE (Safety over EtherCAT). This means that IO-Link Safety Devices can be used unchanged in practically all higher-level systems worldwide.
IO-Link Wireless
IO-Link Wireless eliminates the need for physical cables while maintaining reliable, real-time communication between sensors, actuators, and control systems. It increases flexibility, reduces installation costs, and enables seamless integration in harsh environments. With high data integrity and low latency, IO-Link Wireless is ideal for industrial automation, robotics and mobile applications.
