Standardization (IEC)

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a standardization body located in Geneva, Switzerland (www.iec.ch). It strives for international standards to ensure safety, efficiency, reliability, and interoperability of electrical, electronic, and information technologies. The benefits of supporting and using these standards are:

  • High degree of quality of the documents
  • Worldwide accepted common terms and models
  • Independence of national support organizations
  • Enhancement of international trade
  • Preconditions for directives (laws) such as EMC, electrical safety, functional safety

IO-Link together with its extensions safety and wireless is a fieldbus and manufacturer independent communication solution for sensors, actuators, and mechatronics that can be integrated into any existing fieldbus, information technology, or automation system. Currently, the following IEC projects exist:

  • IEC 61131-9 Edition1 (based on IO-Link Interface and System, V1.1.2)
  • IEC 61131-9 Edition2 (based on IO-Link Interface and System, V1.1.3)
  • IEC 61139-2 (based on IO-Link Safety – System Extensions)
  • IEC 61139-3 (based on IO-Link Wireless – System Extensions)
